"In the summer of 1240, Baldwin’s forces attacked and recaptured the strategically vital city of Tzurulum from the Nicaean forces led by John Petraliphas, reasserting Latin control over Thrace. In this engagement, John II Asen sent a force of Cumans to assist Baldwin in his siege."
1240년 보두앵 2세는 불가리아의 이반 아센 2세의 지원을 받아 세바스토크라토르 요안니스 페트랄리파스의 니케아군을 격파하고 동 트라키아의 촐루 지역을 탈환 했다고 합니다.
"The accounts of the events of 1241 are found in an abridged form in the history of George Acropolites and in a more detailed version in two Venetian chronicles. Although Acropolites mentions this engagement as only as a naval battle, the Venetian sources reveal that a combined land and sea assault on Constantinople was led by the Nicaean emperor John Vatatzes, and fought off by Baldwin II and the Venetian podesta`, Giovanni Michiel. The sources depict a decisive Venetian naval victory in which a Venetian fleet of 10 –13 ships defeated approximately 30 Nicaean triremes, capturing half the Greek fleet as prizes in the waters off Constantinople. After their fleet was routed, the Greek army had to retreat, and the siege was lifted sometime between April and June 1241. After this defeat, Baldwin forced Vatatzes to sign a two-year truce."

이당시 상황을 기록한 로마 학자 아크로폴리테스와 베네치아 학자 마르티노 데 카날의 증언이 다른데, 아크로폴리테스는 해전만 이루어졌으며, 베네치아 함선 10여척이 니케아 함선 30여척을 격파했다고 증언하고, 마르티노는 니케아가 육군, 해군 양쪽으로 협공하고, 베네치아 함대가 니케아의 그리스 함대 절반을 격파했다고 증언합니다.
여느쪽이든 이 전투에서 패한 니케아 측은 2년간의 휴전 협정을 체결합니다.
